Retention Labels

All Jargon Busters

Retention labels help you retain what you need and delete what you don’t at the item level, for example on a document or email. They are also used to declare an item as a record as part of a records management solution for data.
A retention label can be applied to anything from an invoice, a corporate policy, a project plan, to an approval email for publishing a website. A record cant have more than one label. A project plan to build a new building can’t have two labels: one for “a project plan” and another for “asset management”. With only one label allowed, this means you can only have one retention policy applied to the document.
Applying retention labels is performed either manually or automatically. The manual application of a Retention Label follows the pattern of requiring the end-user to pick the “correct” label.
